Choose the Right Word
The SmartBoard activity I have chosen to present is called Choose the Right Word. This activity can be downloaded here from the SmartBoard website. This activity helps students in first through second grade with reading a sentence, letter and sound recognition, recognizing the correct word, and applying that correct word to a sentence.
These objectives correspond to the following reading EALRs:

1.1. Use word recognition and word meaning skills to read and comprehend text.

1.2. Use vocabulary (word meaning) strategies to comprehend text.

2.1. Demonstrate evidence of reading comprehension.

2.2. Understand and apply knowledge of text components to comprehend text.

3.2. Read to perform a task.

This activity also uses the following NETs for Student standards:
1. Basic operations and concepts

  • Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
  • Students are proficient in the use of technology.

3. Technology productivity tools

  • Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity.
  • Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works.

After the teacher gives direct instruction students will take turns to come up to the front of the class and write the correct word in the blank. Students will then click on the ear to see if they got the right answer.
I did not change any parts of the SmartBoard activity; however; as part of my presentation I will let the class know how they could change it to accommodate their own students.
