If you want to experience diversity for a day just come to my classroom. 11 out of th 18 students were born in another country and their first language is not English. It is amazing how quickly children learn, almost makes me wish I could go back and learn more a child. A few of the children speak more than two languages but all speak English fluently. A few of the other languages are, Spanish, Swedish, Hungarian, and Indo-Aryan. A big reason for so much diversity at my school is it is in Redmond and Microsoft headhunts people from other countries.
I think that realizing how quickly students pick up languages is one hint that they are able to absorb more information than we expect. Children are quick and should be seen as quick. True children need to play and grow and shouldn't be expected to grow up too quickly but we also need to realize their potential.

Great observation and reflection about the students in your class. It is amazing how quick students are to learn new things -- and I wonder when the ability to quickly learn stops and why? What a great opportunity the students in your class have to learn about other cultures and languages.
What a wonderful learning experience for you! You have a great grasp on how quickly children can learn and you will have an appreciation for the modifications that you will need to do to your lesson plans in order to incorporate all of those marvelous kids. This sounds like a fun, but challenging classroom.
